I'm amazed that she was so-well informed. Alas, this is not the case with American Jewelers. The few which are still authentic, are not 100% the way they used to be.

Oscar,

I really appreciate your insights. Last week I was in the Paris airport and browsed the retailer “Montres and Bijoux” there. The manager waved at all the cases with merchandise from Chanel, Gucci, Tag, etc. and said none of it was a true watch. She said the only pieces they had that were significant were IWC, JLC and Rolex.

Do JLC, Patek, Vacheron and IWC still make their own movements and mount them in their cases in Switzerland?

John

Dear John,

I wish to infrom you, that all the complicated movements with chronometer certificates are made in 2 factories only. If you want the best quality and the top of the line, you pay an extra 200 Sf and they send it to the government agency where it's being tested and the certificate is being issued. All our movements are with certificates, except for retro watch because it's too old.

You'll be shocked and surprised to learn that many of the so-called famous names are not even assembeled in Switzerland, they are stamped out there, and sent to China to assemble. Most of the steal cases are manufactured in Bangkok. Needless to say, steal we're buying tons, gold we're buying grams. These watches are bought because of their name recognition. Most of these Co. are owned by conglomerates. Unfortunately the famaous prestige names stores in the US are also owned by conglomerates and have the same policy: cheap quality, high prices. Incidentally, a book was published named "The Devil Sells Prada" that tells the story in the US. In a week or so, the review of the book will be posted on my website.

Sincerely,

Oscar Waldan

This is a very interesting piece. Is the movement ETA? What is the price of the watch?

Thank you for your information!

John
