A history of fine swiss watches

Oscar Waldan on the issue of cases and sapphire crystals:

I set out to make quality chronographs for several reasons. One of these was that I was appalled to observe that nearly 80% of the old chronographs had been mishandled by the watchmakers who had serviced them.

I was also prompted to pursue the creation of new chronographs by the new technology available at the time. Old chronographs had crystals made of plexiglass or glass, which were easily scratched or cracked. In addition, plastic crystals turned yellow with age allowing discoloration of the dials.

The cases themselves on the gold chronographs were thin and flimsy. On the majority, snap backs instead of screw down backs were used. Therefore, they were not water resistant. With newer water resistant methods, the advent of sapphire crystals, and the opportunity to purchase unused old stock movements (and subsequently with the new automatic chronograph movements), I decided to produce classically designed chronographs for the watch connoisseur, collector, and enthusiast.

-Sincerely,

Oscar Waldan
